“The best day of our holiday.”
Margaret & Bill · Charleston, SCPlan · What to wear
Yorkshire rewards anyone who comes prepared — and preparing is easy. A few thoughtful layers and comfortable shoes are all most days need. Here is how to pack for each season so nothing but the scenery surprises you.
Comfort first — climate-controlled vehicle, short easy stops, umbrellas on board.
The short version
The golden rule for Yorkshire is layers. Mornings on the tops can be crisp even in summer, valleys warm up quickly, and the coast carries its own breeze — so a few thin layers you can add or remove beat one heavy coat every time.
Because your private vehicle travels with you all day, you never have to carry much: keep a waterproof and an extra layer to hand, leave everything else on board, and enjoy the day.

Season by season

Bright but changeable. Bring layers, a light waterproof and sunglasses — daffodils and lambs one minute, a sharp shower the next.

Warm valleys, breezy tops. Light layers, sun cream and a hat, plus a thin jacket for the higher, cooler viewpoints and the coast.

Glorious colour and cool air. A warm mid-layer, waterproof and sturdier shoes make the most of misty mornings and golden afternoons.

Crisp, quiet and beautiful. A proper coat, hat, gloves and warm footwear — the vehicle is toasty, so you only wrap up for the stops.
The checklist
Trainers or sturdy shoes for easy paths; boots only if you have asked for a longer walk.
A t-shirt, a jumper or fleece and a jacket beat one bulky coat — add and remove as the day changes.
Packable and worth it. Showers pass quickly and we carry umbrellas to borrow.
Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat — useful more often than visitors expect, even in the Dales.
For a camera, water and anything you want at each stop; larger bags stay in the vehicle.
Keep essentials with you; your guide is happy to build in stops whenever you need them.
