The short version

Pack light, layer up, wear comfortable shoes

The golden rule for Yorkshire is layers. Mornings on the tops can be crisp even in summer, valleys warm up quickly, and the coast carries its own breeze — so a few thin layers you can add or remove beat one heavy coat every time.

Because your private vehicle travels with you all day, you never have to carry much: keep a waterproof and an extra layer to hand, leave everything else on board, and enjoy the day.

Season by season

Dressing for the Yorkshire year

Spring sunshine on the Yorkshire coast at Whitby

Spring (Mar–May)

Bright but changeable. Bring layers, a light waterproof and sunglasses — daffodils and lambs one minute, a sharp shower the next.

A perfect summer day in the high Yorkshire Dales

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Warm valleys, breezy tops. Light layers, sun cream and a hat, plus a thin jacket for the higher, cooler viewpoints and the coast.

Autumn colour in Wensleydale

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Glorious colour and cool air. A warm mid-layer, waterproof and sturdier shoes make the most of misty mornings and golden afternoons.

A crisp winter day in the high Yorkshire Dales

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Crisp, quiet and beautiful. A proper coat, hat, gloves and warm footwear — the vehicle is toasty, so you only wrap up for the stops.

The checklist

What to bring, whatever the season

Comfortable footwear

Trainers or sturdy shoes for easy paths; boots only if you have asked for a longer walk.

Thin layers

A t-shirt, a jumper or fleece and a jacket beat one bulky coat — add and remove as the day changes.

A light waterproof

Packable and worth it. Showers pass quickly and we carry umbrellas to borrow.

Sun protection

Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat — useful more often than visitors expect, even in the Dales.

A small day bag

For a camera, water and anything you want at each stop; larger bags stay in the vehicle.

Any medication

Keep essentials with you; your guide is happy to build in stops whenever you need them.

Good to know

Common questions about what to wear

Not usually. Most of our stops are short, easy strolls, so comfortable trainers or sturdy shoes are fine. If you would like a longer walk we will let you know in advance so you can bring boots.
Yorkshire weather changes quickly, so a light waterproof is always worth packing. The vehicle is warm and dry between stops, we carry umbrellas to borrow, and your guide will happily reshape the day around the brightest spells.
